Our Halloween

Even though Halloween is naturally my favorite holiday {have you seen me?} - this year was extremely low-key.

Which, I am fine with. But I always hope that the next year will be crazy, over-the-top.  And it will be. Oh, just wait, peeps! But, it's a secret until then... ;)

For now, we did the pumpkins. Very anti-climatic, I might add.
And then the trick or treating.

That was it. No parties. No elaborate decorating. I didn't even have a "costume". Well, granted with my normal hair and make-up, people always think I'm "something or other." Halloween is the easiest day of the year for me to finally fit in!

Berlyn's costume was bought a good 2 months in advance. I had to hide it so she wouldn't  play dress up in it - it was fricking expensive!!! But it was worth it. SO CUTE!

I was especially excited about trick or treating this year because of our new neighborhood. We live in a historic district and the homes, trees, atmosphere is amazing for Halloween. We weren't disappointed!

 Until next year!

Horror Kitsch

Horror movies are tops, in my opinion. The worse, the better. I really don't care about quality either. B or C budget? Sure.
I pretty much love anything and everything to do with horror, monsters, ghosts, supernatural, goth. You get my drift.

I compiled this list based on what I love and obsess over...and I make no apologies.

1. Vampires.

Oh, I know. I know what you are thinking. So "cliche, so trendy, so juvenile." Well, let me get something straight here. My love of vampires is not based on Twilight, True Blood or even, Buffy. It started way back, like 1985. I was weird; I loved horror movies even as a child. And, I rarely was scared. In fact, one of my earliest memories is watching "The Lost Boys" and being seriously pissed that Kiefer Sutherland got killed. Not that I wanted the "good guys" to die, just that I thought "Why are the vamps always getting picked on? They're just hungry!"

And, add to this I was reading Anne Rice years before the movie, "Interview with the Vampire" was even out. I go way back to the Bela Lugosi and the Gary Oldman's. Capiche?

But, I admit. Edward is yummy.

2. Crappy Horror Films

As I mentioned, the crappier the better. Seriously, I love bad acting, awful effects and fakeness. It makes for even more entertainment, in my opinion. I have a few that I love and they are beyond awful.
*Trick or Treat
*To Sleep with a Vampire
*Rawhead Rex
*Night of the Demons
*Fright Night 1 & 2
*any Elvira movie
*The Unnameable
*all of the Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween and Friday the 13ths

3. Goth Music

I didn't truly get the "goth" title until I was about 10. But even then, Motley Crue was all I could see so I ignored just how much I loved The Cure, Sisters of Mercy and Bauhaus. Until I moved to Idaho. no clue why that happened then but it did and I spent many happy years, alone in my room, writing emo poetry and developing my now "tradesmark" eyeliner.

4. The "Look"

Which leads me to: The Look. Unfortunately (or fortunately) for me, I have always resembled a witch/vampire. No matter how I try to "tame down" my look, it really does no good. So, I just go with it. There are worse things, I'm sure.

5. The Guys

Yeah, yeah. I've been made fun of forever about this. I have never been a fan of Brad Pitt's or George Clooney's. Give me a Criss Angel, Brandon Lee, Marilyn Manson any day.

Years ago, when the Tom Green show was on, a friend of mine made fun of me relentlessly for a naive, air headed comment I made. Basically, on the TG show, he had a magazine called "Deathly Man Magazine"...it showed pics of guys who were pale, sickly and on drugs. Now, one of the guys I thought was cute and I was like "Where can I get this magazine?!" And...it was a joke. Not a real magazine and I was sad. My friend laughed so hard at me...I really don't blame her.

HAPPY HALLOWEENIE!

In the last few years (with the exception of the Halloween of 2008), I haven't really been in the true Halloween spirit. Which is a total shame since it is undisputedly my FAVORITE holiday. A lot of it usually has to do with the fact that I am unhappy with my body and refuse to dress up. Haha. I know most women would relate. It takes the fun out of the holiday if you can't "sex" it up, ya know? Isn't Halloween the holiday when "women can look like total sluts and get away with it"? Ugh..don't get me started. I could rant for days.

But this year, my daughter is finally at the perfect age for Halloween and Christmas. She is curious, she is excited and quite honestly, it's fun to mess with her. When I explained Halloween to her one day she FREAKED OUT. Like, jumping up and down, squealing freaking out. I would too if someone had just told me you walk up to any rand0m house and demand free candy and get to wear a snazzy costume.

Simply put, I am really excited to have a "Mommy Halloween" this year. Making it all about HER. Besides I watch horror movies and dress in black year round. Halloween is everyday for me! My brother, sister in law and Mom are all taking Berlyn out trick or treating and I can't wait!

Next year, I hope to attend a decadent Halloween party and wear my Lily Munster costume. But, that can wait..and also, give me enough time to actually fit into the costume.

Hope everyone has a SAFE and Happy Halloween! Love you.

Happy Weekend!!!

Hope you all have a "spook-tacular" time this Halloween weekend! I love this holiday, if not for the candy, for all the horror movies & ghost hunting shows on TV! Lol.

I have a sick little girl right now at home, so, no Halloween fun for us this year :( But, we will make up for it next year, that's a promise!

Just in case you were wondering...

How awesome is this?! I have always loved Elvira - not only for her sultry sexiness but she's so funny and wise-cracking. I own both of her movies.

I had plans to be her for this Halloween but decided to wait. Maybe next year  :)

Paranormal Love

As much as I adore and love happy, pretty, fun things (see all my posts about retro things, Marilyn Monroe and the happy songs on my music player); I also enjoy the darker side sometimes. The Supernatural and Paranormal have been a figurehead in my life since I was very young. I get excited by it, I get entraced by it and I sometimes wish I was a real life "Ghost Hunter". LOL! I'm not even kidding.

A few days ago, I came across this riveting tv show on A&E, called "Paranormal State". What I love about these shows (like "Ghost Hunters") is that most of the time, the people are skeptics. And, its up to science, testing and logic to prove if this phenomena is really occuring. I love the process, and the emotion involved. Not to mention, the stories. So much so that I have always wanted to do it for a living. But, I've looked into it and, it's not really lucrative :(

Whether you believe or not, these shows are still extremely entertaining.
You should check this one out (even if you aren't a believer, it's great television!):

Writer's Workshop: Halloween Memories

What is your most memorable Halloween memory/story/costume? Tell us about it.

For as long as I can remember, Halloween has been my favorite holiday. Since childhood I have been fascinated, obsessed and enthralled by everything supernatural or horror-related. My earliest memories are of watching "Poltergeist", writing stories about my great-grandpa's "haunted house" or reading those "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" books for pre-teens. I naturally, have an affinity for vampires and witches. And, I also have naturally (almost) black hair. When I was 16, working as a cashier at MacFrugals, a little girl said loudly, to her Mother "That lady looks like a witch, Mommy!". Gee, you think so?

I could go on for literally, hours on this subject. But, I'll spare you.

Which brings me to my assignment:
What was my most memorable Halloween?

Well, mine was about 2 years ago. I had just had my daughter and needed to, not only, get out of the house but also felt the need to get back into all the goth-y and freaky things I once was such a fan of. I talked my sister-in-law, Cari into going to the local "HAUNTED WORLD" out in the fields of Idaho. It's one of those creepy mazes in a cornfield with tons of special effects, creatures in costumes that follow you (with chainless chainsaws) and all that kind of stuff. It's great; I love it. Cari...not so much. We were out in the middle of a cornfield, following the dark, muddy path along with a group of other thrill-seekers. I couldn't see a damn thing. And then, we heard the chainsaw off in the distance. Cari FREAKED. We had been linked by our arms but she threw hers up in the air, while sending me and my purse flying into the cornfield. She took off like a rocket. I was left scrambling, trying to find my purse..with my car keys, ID and phone in the muddy blackness. People kept passing me as I walked deeper into the cornfield trying despretely to find my little black purse.

Finally, my hands found it and I was over-joyed. And relieved. We were out in the middle of about 40 acres of corn & dirt. But, "we" wasn't correct. Cari was gone. Now I had the task of trying to find her. I jogged up the path, all while dodging psychopaths and werewolves trying to find my sister-in-law. Seeing her nowhere nearby, I started calling her name "Cari, Cari!". This caused a bigger problem. People started curling away from me and screaming, like I was part of the attraction. What the....? Oh, I get it. "Carrie"..like the Stephen King book/movie. I was, after all, in a scene directly out of "Children of the Corn". Duh.

I did find her. And, we laughed our butts off at what had happened. I went the following year with some friends and, trust me, I hung onto my friend as tightly as I could and...I did not bring my purse.

This year? It's all about Berlyn. As it should be.
My last Halloween was a little hedonistic, even for me. What happened you ask? Let's just put it this way: I danced and drank the night away, all whilst making out with a 50 year old guy who's costume was "Junkie Spice" *shudder* and then, losing my glued on fangs (I was a vampire) while dancing with a really cute guy. He left me on the dance floor.

It was quite an evening.
